Rava Appam is a delicious dish that you can make for Karthigai Deepam, I have already posted neiappam and wheat flour appam so thought of posting Rava Appam Recipe this year.I loved making this appam and eating it too! Quite addictive dish that I couldn’t resist myself till the shoot was over.

This Rava Appam is made for different occasions and particularly made during Karthigai Deepam. It is one of the most liked dish at Kerala and coastal Tamilnadu homes.

Lighting diyas and seeing the aura the lighted diyas bring to homes is a bliss. I made the Rava sweet appam around 5pm on Karthigai Deepam day so I have some time to light the diyas and gaze the lights of all the homes in my area. The well lit homes, sparkles of the crackers brings a great positive vibe!

I sought to Rava sweet appam recipe when I do not have time for making the traditional appam or when I run short of necessary ingredients of traditional appam. Believe me, though this appam is a simple and easy recipe when compared to the tradional appams it is equal in taste to the traditional appams! Mittu liked it more and could not differentiate when I made this !

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup fine rava
  • 1/4 cup wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup maida
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoon coconut grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon cooking soda - 1/8 teaspoon
  • a tiny pinch salt
  • water as needed
  • oil to deep fry

Instructions

  • Take rava in a mixing bowl, add water till immersing level, water should not float. Set aside for an hr. This time is very essential for a crispy and layered Rava sweet appam.

  • After an hr add wheat flour and maida, then sugar to rava mixture.

  • Add water to it and mix well to form a thickish batter, more like idli batter consistency.

  • Add coconut, cardamom powder, baking soda and salt , mix well.

  • Heat oil - spoon the batter and add it to the kadai.Use a deep curved laddle / spoon to get round shaped appams. Do not crowd , it will puff up well.

  • Cook on both sides till golden brown. Drain in tissue paper.

  • Serve the Rava sweet appam hot / warm to enjoy the flavor!

Notes

  • I made small appams to fit in my kadai.
  • Adding wheat flour is optional.
    You can add maida instead.
  • After adding baking soda,do not let it rest.
    Make the appams at once.
  • If you want to cut down oil, then make it in paniyaram pan.
  • Alternatively you can make in paniyaram pan too instead of deep frying.
